About SC Innovators

SC Innovators is a machine building company in Chandigarh, set up in 2017 and in industrial automation since 2021. We design and build special purpose machines, automated assembly and testing systems and electrical control panels for manufacturers, and supply industrial components.

We take a project end to end — application study at the customer's plant, concept and mechanical design, control system design and programming, in-house manufacturing and assembly, factory acceptance testing, site commissioning and after-sales support. Working here means seeing a machine you worked on go from a blank sheet to running production at a customer's line.

Our team is small and hands-on, which means everyone gets real ownership early instead of a narrow slice of a large process.

Purpose of the Role

We design and build special purpose machines, automated assembly lines and custom automation systems for manufacturing customers. The Sales Engineer is the first technical contact a customer meets. You will find automation opportunities on customer shop floors, understand the manual process they want to automate, translate that into a clear technical brief for our design team, and carry the enquiry through concept, costing, offer, negotiation and order closure. This is a technical selling role — you are expected to speak the customer's engineering language, not just quote a price.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Lead Generation & Prospecting

  • Identify and build a pipeline of prospective customers across target industries — automotive and auto-ancillary, electronics, pharmaceutical, FMCG, packaging, white goods, electrical components and general engineering.
  • Generate enquiries through cold calls, plant visits, industry directories, MSME and industrial association databases, online portals (IndiaMART, TradeIndia, LinkedIn) and referrals from existing customers.
  • Represent the company at exhibitions, trade fairs and vendor meets; collect and follow up on leads generated there.
  • Map the decision-making structure at each account — plant head, production head, maintenance head, purchase, quality and finance — and build relationships beyond a single contact.
  • Maintain a live enquiry register and sales funnel with status, expected value and expected closure date.

2. Requirement Study & Technical Brief

  • Visit the customer's shop floor, observe the existing manual or semi-automatic process, and record it through photographs, videos, time studies and operator discussions.
  • Capture the complete input data set required by the design team: component drawings and physical samples, part variants, orientation and feeding method, required cycle time and throughput per shift, quality and rejection criteria, available floor space and layout constraints, utilities available (power, compressed air pressure and flow, water, exhaust), material handling at the input and output of the machine, and operator interface expectations.
  • Clarify scope boundaries clearly — what the machine will do, what it will not do, what the customer supplies, and what is in our scope (foundation, utilities, spares, training, installation).
  • Prepare a structured enquiry brief / customer requirement sheet and hand it over to the design and application engineering team.
  • Coordinate joint visits of design and electrical engineers to the customer site where the application is complex.

3. Concept, Costing & Offer Preparation

  • Work with the design team to develop the machine concept, station-wise layout, cycle time estimate and 3D concept views for the proposal.
  • Support cost estimation — bought-out components, fabrication, machining, panel and electricals, assembly man-hours, programming effort, installation, freight, contingency and warranty cost.
  • Prepare the commercial offer: technical specification, scope of supply, exclusions, price, taxes, delivery schedule, payment milestones, warranty terms, and validity.
  • Build the justification for the customer — manpower saved, cycle time and output improvement, rejection reduction, consistency and traceability gained, and simple payback / ROI in months.
  • Maintain version control on offers and keep a record of every revision shared with the customer.

4. Presentation, Negotiation & Order Closure

  • Present the concept and commercial offer to the customer, defend the technical approach, and answer engineering questions on feasibility, accuracy, cycle time and safety.
  • Handle objections on price, delivery period and specification; negotiate within the approved margin and delivery limits, and escalate anything outside them.
  • Arrange reference visits to existing installations and share relevant case studies where applicable.
  • Scrutinise the customer purchase order against our offer — specification, price, taxes, delivery date, payment terms, liquidated damages, warranty, and any onerous clause — and flag deviations before acceptance.
  • Achieve the monthly, quarterly and annual order-booking targets agreed with the Sales Head.

5. Order Handover & Project Coordination

  • Conduct an internal kick-off meeting with design, electrical, purchase and production so that the scope, agreed cycle time, delivery date and commercial terms are understood correctly.
  • Get the technical specification and scope sheet formally frozen and signed off by the customer before the design is released.
  • Act as the single point of contact for the customer during execution — share milestone updates, obtain pending inputs (samples, drawings, approvals) and manage change requests.
  • Raise commercial change notes for any scope addition requested after order and get them approved before the work is taken up.
  • Coordinate customer inspection visits, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) scheduling, dispatch clearance and site readiness for installation.

6. Collections & Commercial Discipline

  • Follow up and collect payments against agreed milestones — advance, on drawing approval, before dispatch, after commissioning and retention release.
  • Track outstanding receivables for your accounts, follow up on overdue invoices and keep the accounts team updated.
  • Ensure statutory and documentation requirements are met — purchase order, proforma invoice, e-way bill inputs, road permits, bank guarantees and C-form / declarations where applicable.

7. After-Sales & Account Growth

  • Follow up after commissioning on machine performance, output achieved and customer satisfaction.
  • Generate repeat and follow-on business — additional machines, duplicate lines, retrofits, upgrades, spares and Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMC).
  • Coordinate warranty complaints and service visits between the customer and the service team, and keep the customer informed until closure.

8. Market Intelligence & Reporting

  • Track competitor machine builders — their offerings, technology, pricing levels and delivery performance — and report findings to management.
  • Record and analyse win/loss reasons for every quotation submitted.
  • Submit weekly visit reports, funnel updates and monthly sales forecasts; keep the CRM or enquiry tracker fully up to date.
  • Provide inputs to marketing for the website, product brochures, case studies and social media content.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma or degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Production engineering.
  • 0 – 3 years of experience in technical sales, application engineering, or machine shop / production. Fresh graduates with a strong engineering fundamentals and a genuine interest in automation sales will be considered.
  • Working understanding of industrial automation terminology and the ability to use it correctly in a customer conversation — PLC, HMI, SCADA, VFD, servo motor and drive, stepper, pneumatic cylinder and valve, FRL unit, actuator, proximity and photoelectric sensors, machine vision, robot and cobot, conveyor, indexing table, linear guide, gripper, poka-yoke, jig and fixture.
  • Familiarity with basic manufacturing and productivity concepts — cycle time, takt time, throughput, OEE, rejection PPM, downtime, MTBF, line balancing and manpower cost per shift.
  • Ability to read a component drawing and understand dimensions, tolerances and critical features.
  • Comfortable discussing machine safety expectations — emergency stop, guarding, light curtains, door interlocks — at a conceptual level.
  • Good written and spoken English plus Hindi and/or the local regional language; able to write a clear offer, email and visit report.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Willing to travel extensively; valid driving licence and own two-wheeler / four-wheeler preferred; valid passport an advantage.

Good to Have

  • Prior exposure to special purpose machines, assembly automation, material handling or industrial products sales.
  • Ability to read a simple 3D model or layout in a CAD viewer.
  • Experience with a CRM tool (Zoho, Salesforce, HubSpot or similar).
  • Exposure to costing and quotation preparation.
  • Understanding of GST, Incoterms and standard commercial terms for capital equipment.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Curiosity on the shop floor — asks questions until the process is genuinely understood rather than assuming.
  • Honesty in commitments: does not promise a cycle time, price or delivery date that the factory cannot deliver.
  • Persistence and disciplined follow-up over long capital-equipment sales cycles.
  • Clear documentation habits — every discussion converted into a written record.
  • Comfortable working between the customer and the internal engineering team, and able to hold both sides to what was agreed.
