About SC Innovators

SC Innovators is a machine building company in Chandigarh, set up in 2017 and in industrial automation since 2021. We design and build special purpose machines, automated assembly and testing systems and electrical control panels for manufacturers, and supply industrial components.

We take a project end to end — application study at the customer's plant, concept and mechanical design, control system design and programming, in-house manufacturing and assembly, factory acceptance testing, site commissioning and after-sales support. Working here means seeing a machine you worked on go from a blank sheet to running production at a customer's line.

Our team is small and hands-on, which means everyone gets real ownership early instead of a narrow slice of a large process.

Purpose of the Role

The Maintenance & Service Engineer is the face of the company at the customer's plant after the machine is dispatched. You will install and align the machine, get it running, respond when it stops, diagnose the fault, repair it, and train the customer's operators and maintenance staff to run it properly. A machine is judged by how quickly it comes back up when it fails — that response is your responsibility.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Installation & Commissioning at Customer Sites

  • Prepare for despatch: verify that the machine, tooling, spares, fasteners, manuals and tool kit are complete before it leaves our works.
  • Install the machine at the customer's plant — foundation and floor checks, positioning, levelling and alignment, utility connection (power, compressed air, water, exhaust) and guard fitment.
  • Level and align the machine and its sub-assemblies independently, using spirit level, dial gauge, tri-square and shims to the accuracy the application requires.
  • Support the Electrical & Automation Engineer during power-up, dry run, trial production and the Site Acceptance Test.
  • Complete the installation report, get the handover document signed by the customer, and report site issues back to the design and project team.

2. Breakdown Response & Fault Diagnosis

  • Respond to customer breakdown calls within the committed response time; attend by telephone first and travel to site when it cannot be closed remotely.
  • Diagnose faults systematically — isolate whether the problem is mechanical, pneumatic, electrical or programming, rather than replacing parts at random.
  • Repair or replace worn, damaged or misaligned parts; restore the machine to the original cycle time and accuracy, not just to a running condition.
  • Identify the root cause of a repeated failure and propose a permanent fix, distinguishing clearly between a temporary arrangement made to restart production and the permanent correction still pending.
  • Record every breakdown — the symptom, the cause, the action taken, the parts consumed and the downtime — in the service report and the service log.

3. Preventive Maintenance & AMC

  • Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance visits under AMC or warranty — inspection, cleaning, lubrication, filter and seal replacement, fastener torque check, belt and chain tension, sensor cleaning and alignment check.
  • Maintain the machine history card for each installation: date of commissioning, service visits, parts replaced and recurring problems.
  • Identify wear parts approaching end of life during a visit and raise a spares recommendation to the customer before a breakdown happens.

4. Customer Training & Communication

  • Train the customer's operators on the correct operating sequence, loading method, changeover, alarm handling and daily checks.
  • Train the customer's maintenance staff on lubrication points, routine adjustments, common faults and basic troubleshooting.
  • Explain the problem and the fix to the customer in plain language, and keep them informed on parts, timelines and next visits.
  • Handle customer pressure during a production stoppage calmly and professionally, without making commitments the company cannot meet.

5. In-House Assembly & Machine Build Support

  • When not at site, work in our assembly shop — fitting, assembly, alignment and pre-delivery testing of machines under build.
  • Carry out fitting operations: drilling, tapping, reaming, filing, scraping, dowelling, fastening and basic fabrication support.
  • Check parts received from vendors against drawings using standard measuring instruments, and flag deviations before assembly starts.
  • Assemble pneumatic circuits — cylinders, valves, manifolds, FRL units and tubing — and leak-test them.
  • Give feedback to the design team on anything that was hard to assemble, hard to reach or likely to fail in the field.

6. Spares, Tools & Documentation

  • Carry the correct tool kit and spares for each site visit, and account for what was consumed on return.
  • Coordinate with the store and purchase team on spares availability, and recommend the minimum spares a customer should hold.
  • Submit the site visit report, expense statement and customer feedback within the agreed time after every visit.
  • Keep the machine documentation, manuals and as-built drawings updated with what was actually found and done at site.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • ITI in Fitter, Machinist or Mechanic trade, or a Diploma in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering.
  • Understanding of basic manufacturing processes and how a particular part is made.
  • Good understanding of conventional manufacturing processes — turning, milling (horizontal and vertical), surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, drilling and welding.
  • Good understanding and hands-on ability with basic measuring instruments — vernier calliper, micrometer, dial gauge, bore gauge, tri-square and spirit level.
  • Sound grasp of parallelism, perpendicularity, flatness and alignment, with the ability to independently level and align a machine or a sub-assembly to the required accuracy.
  • Ability to read assembly drawings, part drawings and pneumatic circuits.
  • Basic electrical awareness — sensor connections, using a multimeter, and working safely around a powered panel.
  • Problem-solving mindset: actively looks for a solution, temporary or permanent, to get the job done rather than stopping at the problem.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure, including long hours during a customer breakdown.
  • Good communication skills in Hindi and working English; able to write a clear service report.
  • Willing to travel at short notice and stay at site for extended periods; valid driving licence preferred.

Good to Have

  • Experience servicing special purpose machines, CNC machines or automated lines.
  • Ability to make minor adjustments to a PLC program or HMI setting under guidance.
  • Hydraulics experience in addition to pneumatics.
  • Welding, machining or sheet metal hands-on ability.
  • Valid passport for occasional overseas installation work.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Calm and methodical when a customer's line is down and people are watching.
  • Honest reporting — says what was actually done and what is still pending, including mistakes.
  • Safety discipline around moving machinery, powered panels and lifting equipment.
  • Respectful and patient with operators, who are often the ones who have to live with the machine.
  • Reliable on paperwork: reports, expenses and spares accounting submitted without being chased.

What Success Looks Like

First 3 monthsKnows our machines from the inside through assembly shop work. Attends site visits with a senior engineer and handles installation and levelling independently.
By 6 monthsAttends routine breakdown calls alone, diagnoses common faults correctly and closes them on the first visit.
By 12 monthsOwns a set of customer accounts for service, trains customer teams confidently, and has brought down repeat breakdowns at those accounts.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: as per industry standards, decided on the skill and aptitude demonstrated during the selection process.
  • Travel allowance, site allowance and reimbursement of work-related expenses as per company policy.
  • Statutory benefits: PF, ESI / medical insurance and gratuity as applicable.
  • Structured on-the-job training on our machines and, where relevant, manufacturer training on the automation platforms we use.
