About SC Innovators

SC Innovators is a machine building company in Chandigarh, set up in 2017 and in industrial automation since 2021. We design and build special purpose machines, automated assembly and testing systems and electrical control panels for manufacturers, and supply industrial components.

We take a project end to end — application study at the customer's plant, concept and mechanical design, control system design and programming, in-house manufacturing and assembly, factory acceptance testing, site commissioning and after-sales support. Working here means seeing a machine you worked on go from a blank sheet to running production at a customer's line.

Our team is small and hands-on, which means everyone gets real ownership early instead of a narrow slice of a large process.

Purpose of the Role

The Electrical & Automation Engineer owns everything that makes the machine run. You will define the control philosophy from the mechanical sequence, select components and design the panel layout, draw the control and power circuits on AutoCAD, wire and test the panel, write the PLC program and HMI screens on Siemens and Fuji Electric platforms, and install and commission the machine at the customer's plant. This is a hands-on role — you will be on the shop floor with a screwdriver and a multimeter as often as you are at a laptop. Our machines are one-off builds, so the program and the panel you produce have to be robust, readable and maintainable by the customer's team after you leave.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

1. Control Philosophy & Hardware Selection

  • Study the mechanical design, general arrangement drawing and sequence of operations with the design engineer, and prepare the control philosophy — auto, manual, single cycle, homing, jog, recovery and emergency behaviour.
  • Prepare the input/output (I/O) list — digital inputs and outputs, analog signals, spare I/O margin — and the alarm list.
  • Select and size the control hardware: Siemens S7-1200 / S7-1500 / LOGO! and Fuji Electric MICREX-SX SPH / SPF series CPUs, digital and analog modules, communication modules, power supplies and remote I/O.
  • Select field instrumentation with the design team: inductive and capacitive proximity sensors, photoelectric and fibre sensors, area sensors, encoders, load cells, pressure and temperature transmitters, vision cameras and barcode readers.
  • Select HMI, drives and safety devices, and prepare the bought-out list for purchase with make, model and lead time.

2. PLC Programming

  • Develop PLC programs on Siemens TIA Portal (Ladder, FBD and SCL) and on Fuji Electric SX-Programmer Standard / Expert (D300win).
  • Write structured, modular, well-commented programs using functions, function blocks, UDTs and a consistent tag naming convention rather than a single long ladder.
  • Implement the full machine sequence: initialisation and homing, auto cycle, manual and maintenance mode, step-by-step debug mode, cycle stop, emergency stop and controlled recovery from any stop condition.
  • Implement interlocks, condition checks, timers, counters, production counters, batch and shift counters, and part traceability logic where required.
  • Implement comprehensive alarm and diagnostic handling — every abnormal condition must produce a clear operator message identifying the station and the cause.
  • Implement poka-yoke and quality checks — part present/absent, orientation check, correct component check, torque or force verification, pass/fail routing and reject binning.
  • Build and maintain a library of standard reusable blocks so that each new machine starts from proven code.

3. HMI, SCADA & Data

  • Design and develop HMI applications on Siemens WinCC (Basic / Comfort — KTP and Comfort panels) and on Fuji Electric / Hakko Monitouch panels using V-SFT.
  • Create clear operator screens: machine mockup/overview, manual operation screens, I/O status and diagnostics, alarm banner and alarm history, production and rejection counters, settings and parameter screens, recipe management and multi-level password protection.
  • Implement data logging, trending and report generation — production data, downtime, rejection reasons and OEE-relevant data.
  • Where in scope, provide connectivity to the customer's SCADA, MES or ERP system, and configure data transfer to a database or a shared server.

4. Drives, Motion & Communication

  • Parameterise, tune and commission variable frequency drives and servo drives — Siemens SINAMICS V20 / G120 / V90 and Fuji Electric FRENIC series and ALPHA servo drives.
  • Configure motion functions: homing, absolute and relative positioning, indexing, speed and torque control, multi-position sequences, and basic synchronised motion.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial communication — PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP, IO-Link and serial RS232/RS485 links.
  • Integrate third-party devices: barcode scanners and printers, RFID readers, vision systems, laser markers, weighing scales, torque tools, screwdriving controllers and leak test instruments.

5. Panel Design & Circuit Drawings

  • Select panel components and size them correctly — MCBs, MCCBs, contactors, overload relays, control relays, SMPS and transformers, terminal blocks, cable glands, panel cooling and the required IP rating.
  • Design the panel layout: component placement, DIN rail and trunking arrangement, heat load and ventilation, separation of power and control wiring, and serviceable access for maintenance.
  • Draw control and power circuit diagrams on AutoCAD (or AutoCAD Electrical / EPLAN) — single line diagram, power circuit, control circuit, PLC I/O wiring, terminal numbering, cable schedule and the panel general arrangement.
  • Maintain drawing revisions and issue as-built drawings after commissioning so that the drawing in the customer's panel matches the panel in front of them.

6. Panel & Machine Wiring, Safety Circuits

  • Carry out and supervise panel wiring — both control and power — with correct wire sizing, colour coding, ferruling, crimping, earthing, cable dressing and panel labelling.
  • Wire the machine end: sensor and actuator connections, junction boxes, cable routing and drag chains, motor and drive power cabling, and shielded cabling for analog and communication lines.
  • Design, wire and verify safety circuits: emergency stop loops, safety relays and safety PLC logic, light curtains, safety door switches and interlocks, dual-channel wiring, muting and safe reset behaviour.
  • Carry out pre-power checks — insulation and continuity checks, earth verification, phase sequence and voltage checks — before the machine is energised for the first time.

7. Testing, Commissioning & Site Work

  • Carry out I/O loop checking, sensor setting and calibration, actuator dry runs, and station-wise testing before full cycle trials.
  • Debug and optimise the machine to achieve the guaranteed cycle time, accuracy and repeatability.
  • Conduct internal testing and support the customer Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at our works, including the trial run with actual components.
  • Travel to the customer site for installation, wiring restoration, commissioning, trial production, Site Acceptance Test (SAT) and handover.
  • Train the customer's operators and maintenance team on machine operation, alarm handling, changeover and basic troubleshooting.
  • Attend breakdowns and provide telephone, remote and on-site support during the warranty period.

8. Documentation & Backups

  • Maintain project-wise backups of every PLC program, HMI application, drive parameter set and device configuration, with proper version numbering and change history on the company server.
  • Prepare and hand over the documentation package: I/O list, alarm list, sequence of operation, electrical schematics as-built, drive parameter sheet, operation manual, troubleshooting guide and recommended electrical spares list.
  • Record and update all on-site program changes back into the master copy — no undocumented changes on a machine in the field.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Mechatronics or Electronics & Telecommunication engineering.
  • 0 – 3 years of experience in PLC programming, machine commissioning or automation panel engineering. Fresh graduates with a recognised industrial automation training (PLC, HMI, VFD, SCADA) and a hands-on project will be considered.
  • Hands-on programming ability on Siemens TIA Portal — ladder logic, blocks, tags and HMI configuration. You should be able to write a simple sequence program in the interview.
  • Working knowledge of or willingness to be trained on Fuji Electric MICREX-SX PLCs (SX-Programmer / D300win) and Fuji Monitouch HMIs; prior exposure is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to read, draw and work from electrical schematics and wiring diagrams, and working ability on AutoCAD for circuit drawings.
  • Sound understanding of control and power circuits, and of basic electrical fundamentals — star/delta, single and three phase supply, motor starting, protection and earthing.
  • Hands-on panel wiring ability, or the willingness to learn it on the floor — this role does not stop at the laptop.
  • Practical knowledge of field devices and 24 VDC control wiring — PNP and NPN sensor wiring, relays, contactors, MCB and fuse selection, encoders and analog signal (4–20 mA, 0–10 V) wiring.
  • Comfortable using a multimeter and standard hand tools, and working on a live machine on the shop floor.
  • Understanding of pneumatics and mechanical sequences well enough to discuss the machine intelligently with the design team.
  • Willingness to travel at short notice for commissioning and breakdown calls, including occasional extended site stays.
  • Good written English for documentation and alarm text, and the ability to explain the machine clearly to operators.

Good to Have

  • Experience with special purpose machines, assembly lines or end-of-line testing machines.
  • Servo motion programming and multi-axis coordination.
  • Mitsubishi, Delta, Omron, Allen-Bradley or Schneider PLC exposure in addition to Siemens and Fuji.
  • Machine vision configuration (Cognex, Keyence, Omron or similar).
  • Robot or cobot programming (Fanuc, Universal Robots, Techman or similar).
  • SCADA development (WinCC, Ignition, Wonderware) and SQL / database connectivity.
  • Exposure to functional safety and risk assessment for machinery.

Behavioural Competencies

  • Systematic fault finding — isolates the problem logically instead of changing things at random.
  • Writes code for the next person: clean structure, meaningful tag names and honest comments.
  • Patience and composure during long commissioning days and customer pressure at site.
  • Safety-first attitude when working on powered panels and moving machinery.
  • Reliable in documentation and backups, especially after changes made at site.
